Lightning Protection Systems

A critical part of the protection of transmission lines.

A critical part of the protection of transmission lines, substation equipment and other installations is the lightning protection system. This may consist of lightning masts, lightning spheres, overhead earthing wires or a combination of these.

When a high voltage installation is extended, new equipment installed or existing equipment replaced the lightning protection systems must be verified to ensure they remain sufficient.

We undertake full site surveys and design of lightning protection systems for new and augmented installations.

Earthing system performance assessment

Testing tailored to deliver valuable asset data.

Assessment of earthing system performance requires a detailed understanding of earthing system design and its physical properties. Our engineers draw on years of experience in both practical testing and theoretical studies, knowing there are many variables involved with preparing the data for the assessment of an earthing system.

Once the data has been collected and prepared, Noble Power Solutions uses both Australian and International Standards in developing the acceptance criteria. These standards include:

  • AS3000
  • AS2067
  • AS7000
  • NA-EG0
  • ENA-EG1
  • IEEE Std.80
  • IEEE Std.81

Automatic Current Shutoff

Current injection testing of an earthing system can require high voltages to generate testing currents. In the event an injection circuit is inadvertently broken most injection equipment will ramp to maximum voltage and remain there. Equipment used by Noble Power Solutions detects an open circuit condition and shuts down the equipment in less than 100ms eliminating any risk to users or persons in the area.

Post Fault Testing

Lightning and heavy power system faults place enormous strain on earthing systems and their connections. In areas of high lightning activity or any earthing system subjected frequent or heavy faults it is recommended to undertake condition assessment testing of the earthing system regularly. A damaged earthing system can result in delayed protection operation or hazardous voltages appearing in unexpected locations as the fault current follows the path of least resistance.
