Critical protection for people and assets

Protection relays and associated devices are a crucial defence mechanism providing protection to both High voltage assets and persons in the event of a fault in the power system. Faults can occur through a number of mechanisms including insulation breakdown, conductor support failure, vandalism or accidental damage, operator error and storms; and all eventuate with the discharge of large amounts of electrical energy in a path other than intended, such as short circuit or earth fault.

In each case it is critical that protection relays detect and clear the fault rapidly so as not to create hazardous situations to people or cause damage to equipment. It is also important the protection relays operate in a coordinated manner with other protection relays on the network to ensure power disruptions are limited to the faulted section only.

Noble Power Solutions engineers understand the importance of these requirements and when testing and commissioning new protection devices perform thorough testing to ensure relays will operate as designed and as required under the network service provider rules. Our engineers perform testing and fault simulations of an entire protection scheme to gain the high degree of confidence required prior to placing new equipment in to service.

This is similarly true when our engineers are performing routine maintenance and testing of protection relays, ensuring all circuits from start to end are working as expected, and verification of applied protection settings against those as designed to ensure there have not been any unintentional changes.
